Book Spine Width Calculator (KDP, IngramSpark & Lulu)
The quick version: a paperback spine is just the thickness of the printed pages, which is your page count times the paper factor. Enter your numbers below and you will get the exact spine width, plus the full cover wrap size, in inches and millimeters. Hardcover is a different animal, and the calculator says so honestly instead of handing you a wrong number.
How the spine number is made
There is no mystery to it. For a paperback, the spine equals your page count multiplied by a fixed per-page paper thickness that each printer publishes:
| Printer | Paper | Spine formula (inches) |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon KDP | White | pages × 0.002252 |
| Amazon KDP | Cream | pages × 0.0025 |
| Amazon KDP | Premium color | pages × 0.002347 |
| IngramSpark | 50lb White | pages × 0.002252 (page count rounded up to even) |
| IngramSpark | 50lb Cream | pages × 0.0025 (page count rounded up to even) |
| Lulu | White or cream | pages × 0.002252 + 0.06 |
Two friendly reminders. Always use the page count of your final laid-out PDF, since it shifts every time the text reflows. And Lulu adds a flat 0.06 inch cover-board allowance, so a Lulu spine runs a touch wider than the same book at KDP.
The full cover wrap
A paperback cover is one flat piece wrapping the back, spine, and front, with a little bleed on the outer edges. So the total size the calculator shows is the back panel, plus the spine, plus the front panel, plus bleed on each side. Change the spine and the whole wrap changes with it, which is exactly why the page count needs to be final before the cover is built.
Hardcover deserves its own note
Case laminate hardcovers do not use the paperback multiplier. The spine wraps a real board and crease, and each printer sizes it from its own stepped table that snaps to sixteenths of an inch. For a hardcover, take the spine straight from your printer's cover template generator rather than the formula above. It is the one place where doing the math by hand quietly produces a file that measures wrong.
